Boxing Training FAQ
Answers to common questions about boxing lessons, technique, strength training,
punching power, beginner training, and working with Boxing Coach Juan in Brooklyn
or through remote coaching.
Do I need boxing experience to train with you?
No. Beginners are welcome. We start with the fundamentals and build your technique step by step before progressing to more advanced boxing skills.
Where do you offer in-person boxing training?
I offer in-person boxing training in Brooklyn, New York, including training at Gleason’s Gym.
Do you offer private boxing lessons?
Yes. Private lessons allow us to focus specifically on your technique, movement, conditioning, strengths, and areas that need improvement.
Do you offer remote or online boxing coaching?
Yes. Remote coaching is available for people who cannot train with me in Brooklyn. Your training can include structured programming, technique work, video feedback, and coaching based on your goals.
Can complete beginners learn boxing with you?
Yes. You don’t need to be in shape or know how to box before starting. We build your foundation first instead of throwing you into advanced drills.
What will I learn during boxing lessons?
You’ll work on stance, footwork, defense, punching technique, combinations, movement, timing, and the fundamentals needed to become a more complete boxer.
Can boxing training help me get in shape?
Yes. Boxing can improve conditioning, coordination, strength, movement, and overall fitness. However, the goal is to teach you real boxing skills rather than simply use boxing movements as a cardio workout.
Do you teach proper punching technique?
Yes. Punching technique is a major part of my coaching. The body initiates the punch and transfers force through the hips and torso before the arm delivers it. Body leads. Arms follow.
Can you help me punch harder?
Yes. Punching power is developed through proper mechanics, strength, coordination, and eventually explosive training. Power is built through structure, not random drills.
Can you help me improve punching speed?
Yes. Punching speed depends on efficient technique, coordination, timing, strength, and the ability to produce force quickly. We address those qualities progressively.
Do you include strength training for boxing?
Yes. Once the technical foundation is established, strength training can be used to support boxing performance, durability, and force production.
Will lifting weights make me slow or bulky?
Not when strength training is programmed appropriately. The goal is to develop useful strength for boxing without unnecessary mass or training that interferes with boxing performance.
Do you train competitive boxers?
Yes. Training can be adapted for experienced and competitive fighters who need more advanced technical, physical, and performance development.
Do I have to spar?
No. Sparring depends on your goals, experience, preparation, and whether it is appropriate for your training. You can learn real boxing skills without being forced to spar.
How often should I train boxing?
That depends on your experience, goals, schedule, and ability to recover. Consistent quality training is more important than simply doing as many sessions as possible.
What equipment do I need to start boxing training?
Basic boxing equipment typically includes hand wraps and boxing gloves. Additional equipment can be added as your training progresses.
How is your boxing training different from fitness boxing?
The emphasis is on learning real boxing technique and developing it through a structured training system. Technique first. Then strengthen it. Then express it explosively.
How do I get started?
Choose the in-person or remote training option that fits your needs. We’ll determine the appropriate starting point based on your experience and goals.
